Lower Big Quilcene
Difficulty: Moderate; the faster you go the harder and more technical it gets. This trail will satisfy a beginner or an expert.
Location: Go1 mile South of Quilcene on Hwy 101, turn right on Penny Creek Road and continue up 1 mile to where the FS #27 mainline road "Y"s to the left. Continue up the gravel road, which turns back to pavement, for 4 1/2 miles. One- quarter mile past the first intersection where you veer to the right, turn off #27 Road to the left on a narrow access road to the trailhead. It is signed, but is small.
Description: Probably the best all-around ride we have to offer. It is a 6 mile long trail that is best done as an up-and-back, roughly following the Quilcene River. The upper 1/3 of the trail is through big old growth forest and is beautiful. Most of the trail is hardpack single track, though a mile section in the middle can get muddy and slightly overgrown.
